Inner skin

The work of artist Mandy den Elzen focuses on the unexpected beauty of internal organs. The creation of her work relies on precise fieldwork and the development of conservation techniques. The material she worked with begins as residual material from the meat industry. For “Inner Skin” she transformed the thin, veined skin of lamb tesctiles into parchement.

By treating the material it gets a new appearance and is no longer associated with its origin. By processing other organs and skin in addition to traditional leather, we can make the most out of animal remains. Although den Elzen sees “Inner Skin” as an autonomous work of art, this material also offers opportunities for fashion and product design.
